Answer» SOLUTION :ANHYDROUS `MgSO_(4)` combines with WATER to form `MgSO_(4) . 7H_(2)O` (Epsom salt) and hence it is used as a drying agent for drying solvents . In contrast , anhydrous `CaSO_(4)` does not combine with water to form `CaSO_(4) . 2 H_(2)O` and hence cannot be used as a drying agent .
