#1 Digestion is the complex procedure by which the food is broken down into smaller molecules and converted chemically so that it can be easily absorbed by the cells and tissues of the body of an organism for growth, energy and repair. The food contents that need digestion are carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.#2 During digestion, your pancreas makes pancreatic juices CALLED enzymes. These enzymes break down sugars, fats, and starches. Your pancreas also helps your digestive system by making hormones. These are chemical messengers that travel through your blood.#3 The organs of the alimentary canal are: Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The accessory digestive structures include the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.#4 The proteolytic enzymes of the pancreas, i.e. trypsin, chymotrypsin and carboxypolipeptidase, which are also secreted in INACTIVE forms, continue protein digestion. The end products of protein digestion are AMINO acids, produced by the ACTION of intestinal and mucosal dipeptidases.
