Calculate the power of an engine which can maintain a speed of 50 ms-1 for a train of mass 3 x 106 kg on a rough level track. The coefficient of friction is 0.05. Given g = 10 mg-2.

Answer»

Mass of a train (m) = 3 x 106 kg

Speed of the train v = 50 ms-1

Now, the power of the engine = Force x velocity

= Fv

But, F = μR = μ mg

Hence P = μ mg v = 0.05 x 3 x 106 x 10 x 50

= 7.5 x 107 watt = 7.5 x 104 kW
