Can propene and propyne be distinguished by using Baeyer's reagent? If not, what is the suitable reagent?

Answer»

Solution :Propene and propyne cannot be distinguished by using Baeyer.s reagent, because both can decolourise the pink colour of Baeyer.s reagent.
The suitable REAGNET is Tollen.s reagnet. Propyne would GIVE white PRECIPITATE due to the PRESENCE of acidic hydrogen, whereas propene does not contain acidic hydrogen, and so cannot give precipitate.
