The female characters in the novel play an important role. The novelist has done full justice to the creation of characters of Kanwarani sa and Daulat Singh’s wife. Besides the characters of Bhagwat Singhji and his son, all the male chracters have been poorly presented. In fact they are caricatures and not characters. Khyali, the cook is the dominating character among the servants of the haveli. He is everywhere in the bazaar, in the deep narrow lanes, in the temple, with the panwala, with the tailor, with the merchants and the jewellers. But poor Gangaram, Gokul and Dhapu’s husband are mere puppets. The novelist brings them before the readers whenever she likes. She withdraws them whenever they are not needed.

उपन्यास में स्त्री पात्र तो अपनी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है। उपन्यासकार ने कन्वारानी और दौलत सिंह जी की पत्नी के चरित्र चित्रण में पूरा न्याय किया है। भगवान सिंह जी और उनके पुत्र के अतिरिक्त बाकी सब पुरुष पात्रों को बहुत ही कमी के साथ प्रस्तुत किया गया है। वास्तव में उन पात्रों के आकारों को तोड़ मरोड़ कर पेश किया गया है। वे वास्तव में पात्र हैं ही नहीं। हवेली के समस्त नौकरों में ख्याली रसोईया एक मात्र छाया हुआ पात्र है। वह सब जगह है-बाजार में, गहरी संकरी गलियों में, मन्दिर में, पाने वाले के साथ, दर्जी के साथ, व्यापारियों के साथ और आभूषण विक्रेताओं के साथ परन्तु बेचारा गंगा राम, गोकुल और धापू का पति एक मात्र कठपुतली हैं। जब कभी उपन्यास लेखिका चाहती है वह उन्हें पाठकों के सामने ले आती है, जब उनकी जरूरत नहीं होती वह उन्हें वहाँ से हटा देती है।
