1.

Compare the electrolysis of molten potassium chloride and solution of potassium chloride. What are the processes taking place at the cathode and the anode?

Answer»

Molten KCl

KCl (s) → K+ + Cl-

At the negative electrode:

K+ + le- → K (reduction – cathode)

At the positive electrode:

2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e- (oxidation- anode)

Solution of potasium chloride. At the negative electrode:

2H2O + 2e- → H2 + 2OH- (cathode).

At the positive electrode:

2Cl- → Cl2 + 2e- (anode).
