Answer» Answer: Well, there are probably hundreds of adaptations which make the coconut tree SPECIAL but I’ll limit myself to one - survival: The coconut tree tends to grow naturally close to the sea and this is where its great success stems from because it produces a fruit which FLOATS and which can survive in salt water for many, many months. With this adaptation, the species has been able to colonise huge parts of the globe simply because its fruit has been able to float anywhere around the globe and colonise places where it did not evolve simply by being washed ashore. As if this were not ENOUGH, the fruit of the coconut tree is edible and is stacked with moisture and protein, and a splendid food source for humans. Having its seeds eaten has done the species no harm because far from simply being able to spread around the globe under its own steam, so to speak, floating ACROSS the oceans, the tree has made itself useful to humans who have deliberately cultivated it as a food source. As a result of all of this, the coconut tree’s survival is assured; it’s a plant that might have designed itself in readiness for the arrival and spread of humans about the globe. Other plants, such as wheat, have ensured their survival using humans as the vehicle but their distribution has been entirely at the hands of humans. If humans disappear, the coconut will continue to float around the globe as it pleases, colonising new lands (LIKE the new volcanic islands of the Pacific Rim) for countless millennia to come. |
