To create a balanced assessment approach in teaching-learning, different types of assessment strategies should be incorporated. Assessment can be of three types- assessment for learning (formative assessment), assessment of learning (summative assessment), and assessment as learning (authentic assessment).

Assessment for Learning (Formative Assessment):

• It is also referred to as internal evaluation.
• In this form of assessment, a teacher embeds various forms of assessment all through the teaching and learning process. Therefore, it is an ongoing assessment that allows teachers to monitor students on a day-to-day basis and modify their teaching based on what the students need to be successful.
• Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course.
• Effective formative assessment strategies involve asking students to answer well-thought-out, higher-order questions such as “why” and “how.”
• This assessment provides students with timely and specific feedback that they need to make adjustments to their learning.
• For students, it identifies learning errors that need to be corrected and for teachers, it provides information for modifying instructions.
• It helps the student to actively and continuously engage in learning in a non-threatening and supportive environment.
• Questionnaires, quizzes, oral discussions, unit tests are some tools used for formative evaluation. 
• It provides continuous feedback to both students and teachers regarding learning successes and failures.

Thus it is clear that feedback is part of the teaching process.
