Answer» Caste is a unique feature of the Indian SOCIAL structure. The PRINCIPLE of birth forms the exclusive basis of membership of a caste group. It is endogamous with strict rules REGARDING community meals and MARRIAGES. In theory, there are only four castes but a large number of sub-castes are more important in day-to-day conduct of a family or kin group. The operation of the caste system has a good deal of regional VARIATION. |
