DaWrite briefly about what were the intentions of the partition of Bengal. |
|
Answer» There were two states which were dissected during the partition- Punjab and Bengal. Both were witness to riots and killings. However the scale of killings differed largely in these states. Punjab had experienced widespread massacres including trains full of mutiliated bodies as you would've seen in Gadar. These riots had begun much before partition itself, and continued unfortunately into the partition. Indeed it accelerated when Lahore was given away to Pakistan. Later these killings also spread to Delhi. A substantial portion of the British Indian police was deployed in Punjab itself, but they were still unable to contain violence there. On the other hand, the violence in Bengal had taken an ugly turn with Direct Action Day, 1946 in Calcutta when Muslim League under Jinnah killed 4000 civilians in Calcutta. This was also followed by Noakhali genocides few months later where the majority of casualties were again Hindus (~5000). However major retaliation had not taken place in Bengal largely due to Gandhi. He comforted the casualties' families in Bengal and contained emotions of revenge. There weren't major riots for long as he went from village to village but finally a young Hindu boy killed a Muslim and riots seemed to be underway as casualties |
