People of ancient times lived in a Climax LAND. The region was diverse and often presented major challenges. Occasional climates like drought and monsoon were also part of life in this land. However, great civilizations flourished and developed among the mountains, rivers,  Desert and plains of the sub-continent. I can't THINK that the human progress in ancient times without EXPLOITATION of natural resources. The earliest settlements in India were usually set up in lakes or rivers in hilly, plateau or wood areas where people could make stone and bone tools to live. These DEVICES were used for hunting birds and animals, to replenish soil for growing plants and grains, and also to prepare sites for the establishment of habitats.
