1.

Define diffusion. Is it active or passive? Why is diffusion important to plants?

Answer»

Diffusion is defined as the random movement of ions or molecules of any substance from the region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration until equilibrium is attained. It is a passive process. Importance to plants:

  • It is the only means of gaseous exchange within the plant body.
  • During transpiration, water vapour moves out of the leaf surface by diffusion.
