Answer» Definition - A strong magnetic field produced inside a solenoid can be used to magnetise a piece of magnetic material like soft iron, when placed inside the solenoid. The magnet so formed is called an electromagnet. Working- When the switch is closed to make the strong current pass through the wrapped copper coil, it becomes strongly magnetised. When it is suspended vertically by a strong crane and its lower end is touched with a heavy iron sheet lying on the ground, it will stick to the sheet. The crane can easily lift the iron sheet. To make the sheet free, the current is switched off.
