1.

Define the following terms with example.A. Wurtz Reaction. B. Chain Isomerism. C. Dihedral Angle.

Answer»

(a) Wurtz Reaction: When alkyl halides react with sodium metal in the presence of dry ether the product obtained is alkanes with more no. of carbon atoms.

E.g. CH3 – Cl + 2Na +Cl – CH3 --------> 2NaCl + CH3 – CH3

(b) Chain Isomerism: The isomers which differ with respect to the nature of the carbon atom which may be either straight chain or branched chain.

E.g. For C4H10 butane the two isomers obtained are

CH3CH2CH2CH3

(c) Dihedral Angle:- The angle between the two non bonded hydrogen atoms of the two neighbouring carbon atoms in ethane is called Dihedral Angle.
