Persistence Of Vision: The eye and the brain retain the inpression of an object's image formed on the retina for a SHORT PERIOD of time. The impression persists for 1/16th of a second. Due to this, the images you see just before MIXES with the image you are watching at that moment. This illusion type of thing is called persistence of vision.
