Answer» Leucocytes or white blood corpuscles (WBCs) ( leukos-white kytos-cell ) 1. Leucocytes are colourless, nucleated, amoeboid and phagocytic cells. Due to their amoebid movement they can squeeze out of blood capillaries. This is called diapedesis 3. The size is about 8 to 15 ` mu m` There are about 5000 to 9000 WBCs per cubic mm of blood, This is called total WBC count. 5.The average life span is about 3 to 4 days Leucocytes are of two types-granulocytes and agranulocytes Granulocytes show granular cytoplasm and lobed nucles, They are of three types : neutrophills eosinophis and basophills Neutrophills : 1. The cytoplasmic granules are stainned with neutral dyes 2.The nucleus is three to five lobed hence are called polymorphonuclear leucocytes or poly-morphs 3. They constitute microorganisms Eodinophills (Acidophills ): 1.They show the cytoplasmic granules which are stained with acidic dyes such as eosin 2.The nucleus is bilobed They constitute about 3% (1-6% range )of called WBCs 4. Incrase in number of eosinophills is called eosinophilla Function: 1. Their number increases during allergic conditions 2.They show anti-histamine property 3. They are non-phagocytic Bosophills 1. They have the cytoplasmic granules that are stained with basic dyes such as methylene blues 3. The nucleus is twisted 3. They constitute about 0.5%of total WBCs Function 1. they relase haparin (anticoagulant ) and histamine (involved in inflammatory and allergic reaction ) 2. They are non phagocytic Agranulocytes show absence of granules in the cytopasm and nucleus is not lobed, They are of two types-Iymphocytes and monocytes Lymphocytes: 1. They show large round nucleus 2. They constitute about 25-33% of total WBCs 3.They are two types-T and B-Lymmphocytes Function 1. They are the largest of all WBCs and show large kidney-shaped nucleus. 2. They constitute about 3-9% of total WBCs 3 . They are also called scavengers Function : They are phagocytic in function At the site of infection, monocytes anlarge and differentiate into macrophages which engulf micro orfanisms and remove cell debris.Hence they are also called scavengers. |
