Pari came to the haveli as a child. Geeta’s grandmother-in-law trained her. Winter or summer she had to be up at four in the morning and was busy all the day. When she became a widow she was not allowed to put on coloured saris or bangles. She wore only white or black clothes. Besides supervising the servants, she had to clean the pots of fifty members. She swept the courtyards too. In the afternoon, she pressed Bhabha Sa’s feet. Pari had to clean sacks of grain. Pari was young and loved to talk with the servants. She was not allowed to play with the children of her age. All this makes us feel sympathetic towards her.

परी हवेली में एक छोटी सी बच्ची के रूप में आयी थी। गीता की दादी सासू ने उसे काम करना सिखाया। शरद ऋतु हो या गर्मी का मौसम उसे प्रातः चार बजे उठना पड़ता था और सारे दिन व्यस्त रहती थी। जब वह विधवा हो गई तो उसे रंगीन साड़ियाँ और चूड़ियाँ पहनने की इजाजत नहीं थी। वह केवल सफेद या काले वस्त्र ही पहनती थी। नौकरों की देख-रेख के अतिरिक्त पचास सदस्यों के बरतन-भाण्डे उसे साफ करने पड़ते थे। उसे आँगन में भी झाडू लगानी पड़ती थी। तीसरे पहर वह भाभा सा के पैर दबाती थी। उसे अनाज की बोरियाँ साफ करनी होती थी। परी जवान थी और नौकरों से बात करना पसन्द करती थी। उसे उसकी समान आयु के बच्चों के साथ भी नहीं। खेलने दिया जाता था। इस सबसे हमारे अन्दर उसके प्रति सहानुभूति उत्पन्न होती है।
