After Della sacrifices her beautiful hair, she has a fear that Jim will not like her. She thinks that she is looking like a Coney Island chorus girl. But she can do nothing with a dollar and eighty-seven cents. Out of fear she doubles the fob chain in her hand and sits on the corner of the table near the door that Jim always enters. When she hears his step on the stairway down on the first flight, she turns white for just a moment. According to her habit, she says little silent prayers about the simplest everyday things. She prays that Jim might think that she is still pretty. When Jim looks at her with fixed eyes, she cannot read his expression and she is terrified.

अपने सुंदर बालों को बलिदान करने के पश्चात डेला को भय था कि जिम उसे पसंद नहीं करेगा। वह सोचती है कि वह एक कोनी टापू पर समूह गीत गाने वाली लड़की जैसी दिखाई दे रही है। लेकिन वह एक डालर तथा सत्तासी सेंट से कुछ भी नहीं खरीद सकती थी। डर के मारे वह फोब चेन को अपने हाथों में दोहरी कर देती है तथा उस दरवाजे के पास टेबल के कोने पर बैठ जाती है जिससे जिम हमेशा आता है। जब वह नीचे जीने की पहली सीढ़ी पर उसके कदमों की आहट सुनती है तो वह कुछ सेकण्ड के लिए सफेद पड़ जाती है। अपनी आदत के अनुसार, वह रोजमर्रा की सरल बातों के लिए प्रार्थना करती है। वह प्रार्थना करती है कि जिम विचार करेगा कि वह अभी भी सुंदर है। जब जिम उसकी ओर स्थिर आँखों से देखता है, तो वह उसकी अभिव्यक्ति को नहीं समझ पाती है और वह डर जाती है।
