Before Michael Obi’s appointment, Ndume Central School was an unprogressive school. It was backward in every sense of the word. Mr Obi and his wife put their whole attention into the task of improving it. He had two aims – a high standard of teaching and to turn the school campus into a place of beauty and worked accordingly. Their dream-gardens came to life with the coming of the rains and blossomed. Beautiful hibiscus and allamanda hedges in brilliant red and yellow marked out the carefully tended school compound from the rank neighbourhood bushes. He planted heavy sticks closely across the path at the two places where it entered and left the school premises. These were further strengthened with barbed wire. In this way, he closed the path that crossed the school campus.

माइकल ओबी की नियुक्ति से पूर्व एनड्यूम सेन्ट्रल स्कूल एक पिछड़ा हुआ विद्यालय था। यह प्रत्येक तरह से पिछड़ा हुआ था। मि. ओबी और उसकी पत्नी ने विद्यालय में परिवर्तन लाने के लिए अपना पूरा ध्यान उसे सुधारने में लगा दिया। उसके दो उद्देश्य थे- शिक्षण का उच्च स्तर तथा विद्यालय परिसर को एक सुन्दर स्थान बनाना और तदनुरूप कार्य भी किया। वर्षा के आने से तथा फूलों के खिलने से उनका स्वप्न सच हो गया। चमकीले लाल और पीले सुन्दर गुड़हल और अलमान्डा की बाड़े सुव्यवस्थित विद्यालय मैदान को अत्यधिक बढने वाली समीपवर्ती झाड़ियों से अलग दिखा रही थीं। उसने रास्ते के आर-पार दो स्थानों पर जहाँ यह विद्यालय परिसर में प्रवेश करता और जहाँ इसे छोड़ता था भारी डण्डे गाड़ दिये गए। इन्हें काँटेदार तारों से और मजबूत कर दिया गया। इस तरह से उसने विद्यालय को पार करने वाले रास्ते को बंद कर दिया।
