Washes away critical mineral ions. Aluminum ions, in particular, can be toxic in high concentrations. Acid rain washes away these ions and concentrates them downstream, killing plants.

Causeseutrophication. Eutrophication is the process where oxygen in water is exhausted by rapidly dividing bacteria. Nitrate ions in acid rain encourages the growth of algae, causing an algae boom. The algae blocks the sunlight needed by underwater plants. These plants die. Bacteria feed on the death plants and respire aerobicly, using up the oxygen in water.
