Dhapu, the maidservant of the haveli, tells Binniji that she owes Khyali, the cook, rupees two hundred. He repeatedly taunts her in a way that one would think that he has made a gift of the money to her. He is a ruthless money lender. He charges two rupees interest per month on every hundred rupees and still he chides her. But she cannot displease him. She will need to borrow from him again. Binniji tells her that she will lend her the money without interest. But Dhapu refuses saying that other servants too are needy and they will resent it.

हवेली की सेविका धापू बिन्नी जी को बताती है कि वह रसोईये ख्याली की दो सौ रुपये की ऋणी है। वह बार-बार उसे ताना मारता है कि कोई सोचेगा कि उसने उसे एक उपहार दिया है। वह एक निर्दयी साहूकार है। वह प्रत्येक सौ रुपये पर दो रु. प्रति माह ब्याज लेता है और फिर भी वह उसे फटकारता है। परन्तु वह उसे नाराज नहीं कर सकती। उसे पुनः उससे उधार लेने की आवश्यकता पड़ेगी। बिन्नी जी उससे कहती हैं कि वह बिना ब्याज के उसे पैसा दे देगी। परन्तु धापू यह कहकर मना कर देती है कि दूसरे नौकर भी जरूरतमन्द हैं और वे नाराज होंगे।
