The whole story is woven around the path, which, according to the village priest, was used by their dead relatives. It was the path that was there before, the teacher was born and before his father was born. Their dead relatives departed by it and their ancestors visited them by it. It was the path of children yet to be born. So it was the path that was brewing the conflict between the school and the village. The path is the focal point of the story apparently seems to be a suitable title. Moreover, the phrase ‘Dead Men’s Path’ seems to be suggestive of customs and traditions. For customs and traditions are in themselves Dead Men’s Path on which subsequent generations keep on treading. Hence the title ‘Dead Men’s Path’ is very apt.

पूरी कहानी उस मार्ग के इर्द-गिर्द बुनी हुई है जो गाँव के पादरी के अनुसार, उनके मृत रिश्तेदारों द्वारा काम में लिया जाता था। यह वह मार्ग था जो उस अध्यापक के पैदा होने के पहले से था तथा उसके पिता के पैदा होने के पहले से था। इसी मार्ग से उनके मृतक रिश्तेदार गये थे और उनके पूर्वज उनसे मिलने आते थे। यह पैदा होने वाले बच्चों के आने का मार्ग था। इसलिए इसी मार्ग ने गाँव और विद्यालय के बीच झगड़ा पैदा किया। कहानी का केन्द्रीय बिन्दु होने के कारण यह मार्ग स्पष्टतः कहानी का उपयुक्त शीर्षक प्रतीत होता है। इसके अलावा वाक्यांश ‘Dead Men’s Path’ से प्रथाओं और परम्पराओं की अभिव्यंजना प्रतीत होती है क्योंकि परम्पराएँ और प्रथाएं भी मृत लोगों के ही मार्ग होते हैं जिस पर अनुवर्ती पीढ़ियाँ चलती रहती हैं। इसलिए शीर्षक ‘Dead Men’s Path बहुत उपयुक्त है।
