Answer» With the farmers shifting to water intensive and commercial crops, irrigation has changed the cropping pattern of many regions. Apart from transforming the social landscape, i.e., increasing the social gap between the rich and the poor, it has also salinized the soil. As people wanting different uses and benefits from the same water resources, it gave rise to many conflicts. Farmers were agitated and almost caused a riot in Gujarat, the Sabarmati-basin, over the higher priority given to water supply in urban areas, particularly during droughts. With regard to sharing the costs and benefits of the multi-purpose project, inter-state water disputes are also becoming common. |
