The havelis of Udaipur had the atmosphere of the feudalism. The male members were like the lions and the women were mere sheep. They strictly observed veil and moved thus even within the haveli. The haveli ‘Jeewan Niwas’ was no exception to it. The husbands could meet their wives only at certain times. Men and women had their separate apartments. Life in the haveli was bound by traditions and customs. It was below their dignity to go for shopping. Every thing was provided to the women inside the haveli. Geeta, a Bombay-bred girl found herself like a caged bird. Even her reading habit was ridiculed and became a topic of gossip.

उदयपुर की हवेलियों में सामंतवाद का वातावरण था। पुरुष शेरों की तरह होते थे और स्त्रियां मात्र भेड़े थीं। वे सख्ती से पर्दा करती थीं और हवेली के अन्दर भी घूघट करके इधर-उधर जाती थीं। हवेली “जीवन निवास’ भी इसका अपवाद नहीं थी। पति अपनी पत्नियों से निश्चित समय के अनुसार ही मिल सकते थे। पुरुषों और स्त्रियों के अलग-अलग प्रभाग थे। हवेली का जीवन परम्पराओं और रीतिरिवाजों से बंधा हुआ था। खरीदारी के लिये बाजार जाना शान के खिलाफ था। स्त्रियों को हर चीज हवेली के अन्दर ही उपलब्ध कराई जाती थी। बाम्बे में पली-बड़ी हुई लड़की गीता ने अपने आपको पिंजरे में बन्द एक पक्षी के समान पाया। उसकी पुस्तक पढ़ने की आदत का भी मजाक उड़ाया गया और वह भी गपशप का एक विषय बन गया।
