The characteristics of black soil:

(i) These soils are black in colour and are also known as regur soils.

(ii) Black soil is ideal for growing cotton and is also known as black cotton soil.

(iii) It develops deep crack during hot weather, helping in proper aeration of the soil.

(iv) The black soils are made up of extremely fine i.e. clayey material. They are well-known for their capacity to hold moisture.

(iv) It is found in the plateau areas of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh as well as in the Godavari and Krishna valleys.
