Discuss the reaction of metal with (a)oxygen (b) water and (c)acids with suitable examples. |
|
Answer» Answer: Hello mate Explanation: a) OXYGEN :-When a metal reacts with oxygen, a metal oxide forms. The general equation for this REACTION is: metal + oxygen → metal oxide. RUST is a form of iron oxide and it forms slowly when iron is exposed to air. example: Carbon forms an acidic oxide CO2, sulphur forms an acidic oxide SO2, and hydrogen forms a neutral oxide, H2 b) WATER :-They form stable compound with hydrogen. Their chlorides are completely hydrolyzed by water. Reaction of non-metals with oxygen: They react with oxygen to form acidic oxides or neutral oxides. Reaction of non-metals with water: They do not react with water (steam) to evolve hydrogen gas. c) acids :-Non-metals do not react with acids. This is due to the fact that a SUBSTANCE undergoing reaction with acids, donates electrons to the H+ ions produced by the acids. But non-metals are acceptor of electrons and hence they do not donate electron to the hydrogen ion of the acid. |
