In the essay “On the Ignorance of the Learned”, Hazlitt has clearly distinguished learning from pedantry. To him, learning is not the knowledge of what is already known. And this is what pedantry exactly does. It teaches and propagates which is before us, about us, and which is part of common experiences, passions and pursuit of life. This is the knowledge that one can get from books and other artificial sources. But by learning Hazlitt means knowing something which is the farthest removed from common experience and actual observation. Thus, learning and pedantry do not go together.
