Do you feel happy or sad when you play with your friends. Why?

Answer»

Answer:

Why does seeing someone HAPPY make you sad?

I took a Science of Happiness course at the University of Southern California. There's actually research to support this. It DEPENDS on how well you know the other PERSON (whether they are a stranger or a friend), and if that other person is happy because they achieved some success in something you're interested in or work in (let's call this your domain).

Case 1: Friend achieves success in something that is not in your domain. Definitely CONGRATULATIONS! Your friend just won a Mini-Putt world championship?! AWESOME. You will feel happy for your friend as opposed to a stranger.

Case 2: Stranger achieves success in something that is not in your domain. You don't care much, but sure congratulations (*clap clap*).

Case 3: Friend achieves success in something that is in your domain. Your friend got an A in a class you have together. Your friend got that job you always wanted. If it is something you are pursuing, or is an applicable interest of yours, you will actually feel worse.

Case 4: Stranger achieves success in something that is in your domain. Wow. It's awesome that this person was able to accomplish this. You really hope that you can do the same just like this person.
