It is a green, photosynthetic structure that is one cell thick, usually\xa0heart\xa0or kidney shaped, 3–10 mm long and 2–8 mm broad.\xa0A\xa0prothallus, or\xa0prothallium, is usually the gametophyte stage in the life of a\xa0fern\xa0or other pteridophyte.
