The story is about a woman’s indifference for her mother-in-law. Mrs Malik gets a 10 x 8 room constructed in her house. The room is for her mother-in-law. She expects that the old lady will die soon and then the room will be used as a storeroom. But the circumstances take such a turn that she is able to live in that house only when she herself is a mother-in-law. Now her daughter-in-law gives her the same 10 x 8 room to live in. So now these words re-echo in Mrs Malik’s ears, “I thought it could be my mother-in-law’s room and after her, it might be converted into a store.” Thus she meets the same indifference that she showed for her mother-in-law.  

यह कहानी एक स्त्री की अपनी सास के प्रति उदासीनता के विषय में है। श्रीमती मलिक अपने घर में एक 10 x 8 का कमरा बनवाती हैं। यह कमरा उनकी सास के लए है। उन्हें आशा है कि वह बूढी स्त्री शीघ्र ही मर जायेगी और फिर उस कमरे को भण्डारघर के रूप में काम में ले लिया जायेगा। किन्तु परिस्थितियाँ ऐसा मोड़ लेती हैं कि उन्हें उस घर में रहने को तभी मिलता है जब वह स्वयं एक सास बन चुकी होती हैं।  

अब उनकी पुत्रवधू उन्हें रहने के लिए वही 10 x 8 का कमरा देती है । इसलिये अब इन शब्दों की प्रतिध्वनि पुनः श्रीमती मलिक के कानों में गूंजती है- ”मैंने सोचा कि यह कमरा मेरी सास उपयोग में ला सकती हैं और उनके बाद इसे भण्डारघर में परिवर्तित किया जा सकता है । इस प्रकार उनके साथ उसी उदासीनता का व्यवहार किया जाता है जो उन्हें अपनी सास के प्रति दर्शाई थी।
