COMPOUNDS are substances formed by the chemical reaction between two or more elements. It combines only in a specific PROPORTION as it has a definite composition. They are pure substances.

Examples:

1. WATER- a COMBINATION of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.

Carbon dioxide- a combination of carbon and oxygen.

Mixtures are substances formed by the combination of various substances but not in any specific proportion as they have a variable composition. They are impure substances.

Examples:

1. Sugar solution- a combination of two compounds, sugar and water.

2. AIR- a combination of many gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.
