Explain electronegativity of group 14 elements . |
|
Answer» Solution :Ge , Sn and Pb prefer to exhibit + 2 state because of INERT pair effect i.e., `NS^(2)` electrons remain inert and do not involve in bonding . The inert pair effect increases down the group in the order `Ge lt Sn lt Pb`. Carbon is highly electronegative with ELECTRONEGATIVITY 2.5 Si, Ge, Sn and Pb less electronegative . Hence they do not exhibit NEGATIVE oxidation states. |
