1.

Explain how we can detect the ph level of an acid and a base and give examples of four indicators. what is the ph of metal oxides / hydroxides and non metal oxides / hydroxides??? and what are the exception??

Answer»

We can use many INDICATORS. such as,

  • Red litmus paper
  • Blue litmus paper
  • Phenolphthalein
  • Methyl Orange

  1. When we dip red litmus paper in given SOLUTION if it paper turns blue then it is a basic (alkaline) solution.
  2. When we dip Blue litmus paper in given solution if it paper turns red then it is a acidic solution.
  3. When we PUT Phenolphthalein in given solution if it turns colourless then it is Acidic solution.
  4. When we put Phenolphthalein in given solution. If the solution turns PINK in colour then the solution is Basic.

The pH of Metal OXIDES / hydroxide are more than 7

i.e they are basic

The pH of Non-metal Oxides/ hydroxide are less than 7 . i.e they are acidic.
