In `sp^(2)` hybridization the ONE half filled 2s and two 2p orbitals of excited carbon combine and FORM three `sp^(2)` orbitals. Three sp2 orbitals are planar at `120^(@)` angle. In this planar ARRANGEMENT one 2py orbital is per-pendicular to the plane.
