1.

Explain sp2 hybridisation taking boron trifluoride (BF3) as an example.

Answer»

\hookrightarrow The type of hybridization that occurs in BCl₃ is sp² hybridization. In BCl₃ molecule, boron will be the central atom which contains three bonded atoms but no lone pair of ELECTRONS.

\hookrightarrow  For boron to bond with three fluoride atoms in boron trifluoride (BF₃), the ATOMIC s- and p-ORBITALS in boron's outer shell MIX to FORM three equivalent sp2 hybrid orbitals. In an ethene molecule, a double bond between carbons forms with one sigma and one pi bond.
