Della cut off her beautiful long hair and sold it for twenty one dollars to buy a platinum fob chain for Jim’s priceless heirloom watch. But unknowningly Jim pawns his goldwatch to buy original tortoise shell combs for Della’s beautiful long tresses, as Christmas presents. But it is ironical and sad to they both can’t use their Christmas presents immediately. Della has to wait for her hair to grow back, which may take a long time to grow back. Jim has to wait for a long time to use the platinum fob chain on his watch until he can save enough money to get back the pawned watch. Thus Jim’s and Della’s Christmas gifts for each other are ‘too nice to use just at present’.
