Explain the effect on the characteristics of a river when urban sewage is discharged in to it. |

Answer» Effect of discharge in river : (i) Biodegradable organic matter: Lots of oxygen of wate is used by the icro organisms in decomposition of organic compounds which cause hsarp decline in dissolved oxygen and causes increased fish mortality and disturbances of aquatic food chains. (ii) Inorganic nutrients e.g nitrates and phosphates: cause rapid growth of algal forms and other aquatic plants in the water body called culteural or accelerated eutrophication .excessive growth of the palnktonic algae is called algal blooming (iii) pathogenci mirco organisms : These in trun decrease the quality of water increased death pf aquatic organisms or may be toxic for human being .consumption of such contaminated water my cause infection disease like cholera typhoid jaundice dysentery etc. |
