Answer» Adsorption is a surface phenomenon and hence, the extent of adsorption depends upon the surface area of the adsorbent. Adsorption increases with an increase in surface area of the adsorbent. Finely divided powdered substances provide a larger surface area for a given mass. Hence, a finely divided substance is more effective as an adsorbent.
