Answer» The pressure exerted by the blood in blood capillaries is slightly more than the atmospheric pressure and acts in a direction opposite to that of the atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure decreases with height and at a great height above the sea level, it is very low. As a result, there arises a difference in the internal and external pressures on the walls of the cells and blood capillaries. If the difference is large, it may cause the cell wall and the blood capillaries to burst. Thus, the capillaries in the nose (and ear) may burst causing bleeding.
