1.

Explain why HCl is a gas and HF is a Liquid ?

Answer»

SOLUTION :Due to greater electronegativity of F over CI, F forms stronger H-bond as compared to CL. As a result, more energy is REQUIRED to break the H-bonds in HF than HCI and hence the boiling point of HF is HIGHER than that of HCI. Consequently, HF is liquid while HCI is a gas at room temperature.
