1.

Explain why the following compounds behave as Lewis acids ? (A)BCl_3 , (B)AlCl_3

Answer»

Solution :In both the species, the central atom i.e., Boron and Aluminum are surrounded by 6 ELECTRONS and each CL atom in both is surrounded by 8 electrons. `BCl_3` and `AlCl_3` are ELECTRON deficient and ready to accept a PAIR of electrons. Hence, they act as Lewis acids.
