Find the equation of the following circles having (i) the centre (3, 5) and radius 5 units. (ii) the centre (0, 0) and radius 2 units.

(i) Equation of the circle is (x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2 

Centre (h, k) = (3, 5) and radius r = 5 

∴ Equation of the circle is (x – 3)2 + (y – 5)2 = 52 

⇒ x2 – 6x + 9 + y2 – 10y + 25 = 25 

⇒ x2 + y2 – 6x – 10y + 9 = 0

(ii) Equation of the circle when centre origin (0, 0) and radius r is x2 + y2 = r2 

⇒ x2 + y2 = 22 

⇒ x2 + y2 = 4 

⇒ x2 + y2 – 4 = 0
