1.

Find the value of k, if (x – 3) is a factor of polynomial x3 – 9x2 + 26x + k.

Answer»

Let p(x) = x3 – 9x2 + 26x + k

By factor theorem, (x – 3) is a factor of p(x), if p(3) = 0

p(3) = 0

33 – 9(3)2 + 26(3) + k = 0

27 – 81 + 78 + k = 0

k = -24

To find the zero of x - 3:

Put x - 3 = 0

We get x = 3
