The medulla oblongata is part of the brain stem that controls most of these involuntary actions (The brain stem is the posterior part of the brain that is continuous with the spinal cord. It is made up of three segments; the medulla oblongata, the midbrain and the pons).

Here are some of the regions of the medulla and their functions:

i) Reflex centers - this is responsible for reflexes such as swallowing, vomiting, sneezing and coughing.

ii) The cardiac center - responsible for the regulation of the heart rate.

iii) The vasomotor center - this is responsible for the regulation of blood pressure.

iv) Respiratory center - this is responsible for the breathing activity.
