Hazlitt describes the learned as men who are the untiring readers of books. They depend too much on them and are content with borrowed sense. They have no ideas of their own and are incapable of making independent observations. They draw intellectual support from books and are as Hazlitt says more “literary drudges” whose imaginations are enslaved by scholastic disciplines. They do not possess true knowledge and are deficient in common-sense. They are mere scholars who are ignorant of the beauty and language of nature and the spirit of art, music, poetry, sports and trade and other things of life.

Hazlitt विद्वानों का वर्णन ऐसे व्यक्तियों के रूप में करता है जो पुस्तकों के कभी न थकने वाले पाठक होते हैं। वे उन पर बहुत निर्भर रहते हैं और उधार लिये ज्ञान से सन्तुष्ट होते हैं। उनके अपने कोई विचार नहीं होते और वे स्वतन्त्र अवलोकन करने में अक्षम होते हैं। वे पुस्तकों से बौद्धिक सहारा लेते हैं और जैसा कि Hazlitt ने कहा है केवल साहित्यिक कोल्हू के बैल होते हैं जिनकी कल्पनायें शैक्षिक अनुशासन की गुलाम बनी होती हैं। उनके पास सच्चा ज्ञान नहीं होता और उनमें विवेक की कमी होती है। वे केवल ऐसे विद्वान होते हैं जो प्रकृति की भाषा और सौन्दर्य तथा कला, संगीत, काव्य, खेल व व्यापार की भावना और जीवन की दूसरी बातों से अनभिज्ञ होते हैं।
