Give a test that can be used to confirm the presence of carbon in a compound. Write its three allotropes. |
|
Answer» (i) Presence of carbon can be detected by heating the compound with cupric oxide (Cuo) strongly, when carbon is oxidised to carbon dioxide (CO2), which can be tested by lime water test. C + 2CuO ⇾ CO2 + 2Cu (In the compound) CO2 + Ca(OH)2 (Milky)⇾ CaCO3 +H2O (ii) Also, as an another test, when saturated hydrocarbons are heated, they give a clean flame, while unsaturated hydrocarbons will give a yellow flame with lots of black smoke. This results in a sooty deposit on the metal plate. Three allotropes of carbon: (i) Graphite (ii) Diamond (iii) Fullerenes |
