Give reason : Reduction of `Cr_(2) O_(3)` with `Al` is thermodynamically feasible, yet it does no occur at room temperature. |
|
Answer» In terms of thermodynamics, the themit reduction may be written as : `2//3Cr_(2)O_(3)(s)+4//3Al(s) to 4//3Cr(s)+2//3 Al_(2)O_(3)(s) , DeltaG^(@)=-287 kJ` The reduction is feasible as such . However, acareful look reveals that all the reactant and product species are solids. Therefore, the reaction does not take place at room temperature. Upon heating, chromium melts which means that `DeltaS` will tend to increase thereby making the reaction feasible. |
