Answer» Solution :Aluminium reacts with water and dissolved oxygen to FORM a THIN film of aluminium OXIDE on its surface. `2AL(s) + O_2 (g) + H_2 O (l) to Al_2 O_3 (s) + H_2(g)` Some of the `Al^(3+)` ions from the layer may dissolve in water to form a solution containing a few ppm of `Al^(3+)` ions. `Al^(3+)` ions are toxic and their presence in drinking water or FOOD stuffs is undesirable. Therefore, aluminium utensils should not be kept in water overnight. |
