How are the carbohydrates classified ? |

Answer» On the basis of hydrolysis, carbohydrates can be divided into three major classes : (i) Monosaccharides: A carbohydrate that cannot be hydrolysed further to simple unit of polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone is called as monosaccharide. e.g., Glucose, fructose, etc. (ii) Oligosaccharides: A carbohydrate that yield two to ten monosaccharide units on hydrolysis is called as oligosaccharide. e.g., sucrose and maltose. (iii) Polysaccharides : A carbohydrate which yield a large number of monosaccharide units on hydrolysis is called as polysaccharide. e.g., starch, cellulose |
