Hazlitt believes that the ordinary men are better than the learned in many ways. Unlike the learned, the ordinary men make use of their limbs and live by their labour or skill. They understand the work they do and also the people they work with. They have eloquence to express their views, emotions and passions. They have also wit and spirit to enjoy life. They use language freely and naturally without any hassles. They know more of good things and of character than the learned pedant. Above all, they have commonsense which the learned never had in all the ages.

Hazlitt का मानना है कि सामान्य लोग विद्वानों की तुलना में कई तरह से ज्यादा अच्छे होते हैं। विद्वानों के विपरीत, सामान्य लोग अपने हाथ-पैरों का उपयोग करते हैं और अपनी मेहनत या कुशलता के बल पर जीते हैं। वे उस काम को समझते हैं, जिसे वे करते हैं और उन लोगों को भी जिनके साथ वे काम करते हैं। उनके पास अपने विचार, भावनायें और लालसायें व्यक्त करने के लिये वाक्पटुता होती है। उनके पास जीवन का आनन्द लेने की बुद्धि और मनोभाव भी होता है। वे स्वतन्त्र व स्वाभाविक रूप से बिना किसी परेशानी के भाषा का प्रयोग करते हैं। वे अच्छी बातों और चरित्र के बारे विद्वान विद्यादम्भी से अधिक जानते है। इन सबसे महत्वपूर्ण, उनमें विवेक होता है जो सभी युगों में विद्वान के पास कभी नहीं रहा।
